Recent Regulatory Status: PIA faced airspace bans from the European Union and the United Kingdom in 2020. Good news for travelers is that these restrictions have been lifted. Historical Background
Founded on October 29, 1946, as Orient Airways, the airline was personally envisioned by Pakistan’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. After Pakistan’s independence, the airline was nationalized and rebranded as Pakistan International Airlines on March 11, 1955.

First in China: In 1964, it became the first airline from a non-communist country to fly to the People’s Republic of China.
Speed Record: In 1962, a PIA Boeing 720B set a world speed record on a commercial airline route between London and Karachi, a record that reportedly still stands.
Launch Customer: It was the launch customer for the Boeing 777-200LR in 2004 and, in 2005, used the aircraft to complete one of the world’s longest non-stop commercial flights from Hong Kong to London.
Industry Role: It played a role in establishing Emirates airline in 1985.
